3 Signs You Need To Replace Your Air Ducts

Posted on: 3 August 2023

If you have a forced air HVAC system, your house has air ducts. The ducts run from the furnace and air conditioner and carry the air to the various vents. Most of the time, those vents are just fine, but they will eventually need to be replaced so that they will continue to work as well as they should. That means you need to know some signs that your air ducts are failing. What should you be keeping your eyes out for?

Weird Sounds

One of the things that you should watch for, or in this case listen for, is weird sounds coming from your ducts. These sounds include things like rattling, vibrating, and clanging. Ideally, your furnace and air conditioner should be quiet while they are running, and no noise should come from your ducts, so when you hear anything new or abnormal, you need to call an HVAC contractor to check everything out. It could be something as simple as a loose bracket, but it is also a sign that your ducts are failing.

Uneven Heating/Cooling

Another sign that your ductwork is failing is that your house isn't heating or cooling evenly. There will be hot or cold spots as you go through your home. While you may have always dealt with some warmer or cooler spots, depending on how your ductwork and vents are set up, these will likely be new spots and larger temperature variations. You might not notice until you go check things out because the failure may have been happening slowly, so the cold area just kept getting colder until you noticed.

Higher Utility Bills

If your ducts have holes or leaks, your utility bills will be higher because your HVAC system must work harder to keep up with the demand. As the system works harder, your energy bills will cost you more money. It will also make your furnace and AC work harder, which will prematurely age them, causing you to have to replace them sooner than you would otherwise have to.

If you have forced air heating and cooling, you have ducts in your house. Those ducts have a lifespan, and as they reach the end of that lifespan, they will start to fail. The ducts could also fail from other things. You need to know what some of the signs that your ducts need to be replaced are so that you can get them replaced.

Lowering Your HVAC Expenses

After we purchased our very first home, I realized that I was really struggling with paying for the heating and cooling costs. We were spending much, much more money every month than we thought we were going to, and it was really difficult to figure out what we should do. We thought long and hard about how to minimize our expenses, but we didn't really get anywhere until we talked with an HVAC contractor. He mentioned specific, actionable ways to lower our bill, such as programming our thermostat and using more of our ceiling fans. This blog is all about lowering your bill.
