Why Natural Gas Furnaces Are So Popular

Posted on: 12 May 2022

There are furnaces that run on all sorts of different fuels. Oil-burning furnaces and propane furnaces are both readily available in most areas. Why, then, do so many homeowners choose to have a natural gas furnace installed? As it turns out, furnaces that burn natural gas do have a few advantages over those that burn propane or oil.

#1: You don't have to keep a tank of natural gas on-site

With an oil or propane furnace, you have to keep a tank of fuel on your property. This can be an annoyance for a few different reasons. First, the tank may be a bit of an eyesore. Second, you have to arrange to have the tank filled, which can be a scheduling challenge. With natural gas furnaces, there is no need to keep a tank on your property. Your home can instead be connected to a natural gas line that delivers a continuous flow of gas to your furnace and other appliances. You won't have to look at a tank or make plans to have a fuel company top it off.

#2: Natural gas is clean-burning

There is an increased emphasis on sustainable living lately, and for good reason. The less people can pollute the planet, the healthier it will remain. Natural gas is a cleaner-burning fuel than oil or even propane. Oil furnaces do give off a number of pollutants and greenhouse gasses. Propane is cleaner-burning than oil, but not as clean as natural gas. When you choose a natural gas furnace, you can rest assured that you're making a wise choice for the planet and its future.

#3: Natural gas furnaces are affordable

Although there are some exceptions, natural gas furnaces are often cheaper than furnaces that burn oil or propane. This is partially because the furnaces are simpler. They don't need to be built to deal with the contamination generated when these other fuels are burned. Demand also tends to bring costs down, and there's plenty of demand for natural gas furnaces. Most homeowners find it silly to pay more for a furnace that burns propane or oil if natural gas is an option.

There are areas in which natural gas is not available, and in those cases, a propane or oil furnace makes sense. But if natural gas is an option, it is usually the best option. Talk to an HVAC contractor near you to learn more about natural gas furnaces and residential furnace installation.
