If you haven't added plumbing issues to that list, you might be missing the perfect opportunity avoid problems later on. Here are four plumbing services you need now that you've purchased a pre-existing home.
Clean the Drains
If the previous owners weren't able to provide you with service records for the plumbing system, the first thing you should do is have your drains cleaned. There could be years of bacteria and waste hiding in the drains. Ignoring the buildup could lead to foul odors and clogs. If you have a septic system, the buildup could even lead to the backup of sewage and bacteria into your bathtubs. Unfortunately, if that happens, you and your family could be exposed to diseases such as E.coli, encephalitis, and hepatitis A. Protect your family and your home by having the drains cleaned as soon as you move in.
Update the Fixtures
If you've purchased an older home, you may have fixtures that aren't as efficient as they should be. Unfortunately, outdated fixtures can waste quite a bit of water. In fact, studies show that toilets made before 1982 use anywhere from five to seven gallons of water per flush. Those old shower heads will use another 2 ½ gallons of water per use. To conserve water and reduce your water bills, update all those fixtures.
Install a Water Treatment System
If the previous owners have been running hard water through the pipes, it's time to install a water treatment system. Hard water poses a serious threat to your plumbing, and will cost you additional money in wasted soap and detergents. Not only that, but the hard water will also destroy your clothing and dry out your skin. A water treatment system will remove the minerals and soften your water.
Inspect the House for Leaks
If the home you just purchased has a musty odor, or you've found water stains on any of the walls, there's a good chance that there are hidden leaks behind the walls, or under the foundation. The best way to identify the problem is to have your home inspected for leaks.
