4 Air Conditioning Repairs To Do On Your Own

Posted on: 17 May 2016

If you notice that your air conditioner is not functioning as normal, there are a few things you can do on your own to fix it before you call the professionals to come in to help you. You don't want to make the mistake of calling the professionals for a quick fix, after all, which is not only embarrassing, but can also be costly. Here are four repairs to do on your own:

  1. Check the Thermostat: There are a few signs that the thermostat is the problem that you can easily fix on your own. For example, if your thermostat is powered by batteries, you may need to change them. If this doesn't help, check to be sure that the thermostat is actually set to be at a temperature lower than room temperature and also be sure that it's not set to have just the fan turned on.
  2. Change the Filter: Air conditioners often stop working because it can no longer pull air in due to a dirty filter. A simple fix would be to replace or clean the filter so that it can begin pulling in air once again. Many homeowners make the mistake of thinking their air conditioner has broken down for some other reason and will call professionals for this simple fix.
  3. Melt Ice: Check the air conditioning for any ice formations. This can sometimes happen due to the cold air mixed with any moisture that is stuck near the air conditioning system. Melting the ice can be done by leaving the air conditioning off or by turning on the fan only. If you want the ice to melt more quickly, you can take a hair dryer to it while the air conditioner is off.
  4. Check the Ducts: If you are able to climb into your attic, then you will be able to check the ducts for any blockages that need to be removed in order for air to move freely. You may even need to clean the ducts if they are highly dirty. If you are not comfortable doing this on your own, then at this point a professional should be hired to check the air conditioning system thoroughly for all problems that could be preventing it from working properly.

When you do these four things on your own, you can quickly fix your air conditioning system so that you are able to cool down your home once again and continue with your regular routine in a comfortable home.

We were spending much, much more money every month than we thought we were going to, and it was really difficult to figure out what we should do. We thought long and hard about how to minimize our expenses, but we didn't really get anywhere until we talked with an HVAC contractor. He mentioned specific, actionable ways to lower our bill, such as programming our thermostat and using more of our ceiling fans. This blog is all about lowering your bill.
